Neurodivergent refers to individuals whose neurological development and brain functioning differ from what is considered typical.
Neurodivergent individuals may think, learn, process information, communicate, or experience the world in ways that vary significantly from neurotypical individuals.
When talking about neurodivergent individuals, it is more often than not focused on the challenges, not the strengths.
Many of the strengths that neurodivergent individuals have, particularly problem-solving and creativity, are not necessarily biological.
Existing in a world that is not designed for them means they solve problems every day that neurotypical individuals don't need to. Practice improves these skills.
It's estimated 15-20% of the population is neurodivergent - a range that includes autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and others.[15] The figure is a range rather than a single number because "neurodivergent" is not a clinical diagnosis, so the total depends on which conditions are counted. The true proportion is likely towards the upper end or higher, because under diagnosis is substantial.
This is important to understand as they will more likely than not be in your team, even if they or you don't know. Understanding the different strengths everyone brings to work is essential to solve problems brilliantly, or even just well.
